About Te Rau Aroha Marae, Bluff

About Te Rau Aroha Marae, Bluff.
8 Bradshaw Street, Bluff.

Te Rau Aroha Marae is the world’s southern-most marae. Located in the small town of Bluff, the marae was originally established in the late 1800s as a hostel for local Māori who lived on islands off the Southland coast.
The marae proper was developed in 1985, but the tupuna whare, Tahu-pōtiki, which takes its name from the ancestor (tupuna) of the local tribe, Ngāi Tahu, was opened in February 2003.
Designed by prominent Māori artist, heritage advocate and teacher Cliff Whiting, the wharenui is strikingly contemporary and features the bold colours and rich carvings familiar in Dr Whiting’s work.
While the whare’s rounded, octagonal shape is based on whare-rau – leaf covered dwellings utilised by Māori in pre-European times – the building’s whakairo (carving, artwork) are modern in style.
Another point of difference from many marae is that female, rather than male, ancestors feature inside the whare. This acknowledges the resilience of a people who survived the threat of invasion from the North and an influx of whalers, sealers and settlers from all parts of the world.
Most of the Ngāi Tahu families in Bluff and Southland trace their genealogy from at least one or more of these tupuna wāhine (female ancestors).
Note: Central to Māori culture and community activities, marae are dedicated buildings representing the genealogy and stories of local iwi or people. Marae provide a meeting place for Māori communities for celebrations, bereavements, learning forums (wānanga) and meetings (hui).

MARAE TRIP

Room 7 and 12 is very excited about their trip to Te Rau Aroha Marae in Bluff.  We have been learning about the powhiri at school and what is expected of us as visitors to this marae.  The picture above is of the wharenui.

MY MUM

My mums name is Yvonne Stevenson she works as an Accountant in a business called Summit Accountants with her friend.

She sometimes bakes because she can't be bothered to drive all the way to Frankton to buy all our lunch food. She just bakes them at 5 home.

She likes to go for a walk all by herself. She usually goes around Lake Hayes or sometimes the river track.

She has blue eyes and brown hair and loves to wear long pants and t-shirts.

She used to play netball but she twisted her ankle lots of times so she had to miss out on quite a few games.

She likes to watch Castle on TV, she has the series linked on My Sky.

She used to live in Invercargill with horses .

My Mum

My mum is 42, her name is Charlotte True she works at South Wild.  She has curly brownish, black hair. Her eyes are green, as green as freshly chopped grass.

I love my mum and she loves my back.

She likes going shopping, jogging, she likes eating waffles and salad and all kinds of stuff. She's German like me too! She is the best best cook in the world sometimes, not like my sister Lina True.

I LOVE MY MUM!!!!!!

My dad's name is Peter, Mum calls him Pete.

Dad works at home on the computer .

Dad has black and grey hair and blue eyes .He usually wears a Tshirt and jeans. Sometimes when he comes out of the shower his hair is all spikey.

Dad cooks every night because mum hates cooking and he loves it when he does pasta.

My Dad's name is James. He has brown eyes. He is very funny and always makes me laugh.

He likes hheeaappss of sports but there are too many to explain. But I think the thing he likes the most is well behaved children.

 

My Dad's job is to check houses to make sure they are safe to live in.

 

My Dad and I play stick cricket on an Ipad every night.

 

I love my Dad because he always helps me when I get stuck at things and organises really cool holidays. The thing that annoys me the most is, he does really stinky, toxic farts.

My Dad is called Craig Andrew McLean.  He looks like a guy in his 50s who's been sun bathing for 6 hours, even though he's only 42. He has a number two haircut and black hair. He has brown eyes and a badly shaved chin. He is an accountant. When I ask were he is he says, '' I'm playing the guitar in my room'' but really he is playing on his iPhone.

My Dad makes me laugh with his actions. His hair colour is goldish brown. He is like a cat that has seen dog. He missed out going to Takaka in the holidays. His job is a plumber. A plumber is a person who fixes pipes. As well as being a plumber he is also a cub leader. I think my Dad is the best!

James and the gaint peach

They saw land. Every one was so happy and Centipede jumped down inside and started runing all over the place. Then he came back up and had forgot he was still on the peach and he ran off the side of the peach. And that was the end of him. ''Oh well '' said the Earthworm '' it's good to get rid of him''. Then a big plane came rushing past and broke all the strings the seagulls were tied too.Then down they went all the way down to land.''I think Centipede is more lucky than us''!said Silk-worm.

They could see the Empire state building. And from James's it looked like they were going to land right on top of the spike on the building .Which looked like the worlds biggest needle. And then SHING! the peach went right through the spike on the building. And now it looked like a round piece of chicken on a stick. And in about ten seconds there was a big crowd around the building.Peopole were shouting crazy things like ''it's a flying saucer from out of space!'' And then half an hour later some one said ''it's a a giant peach''! And by that time Firemen and police had showed up. They managed to get the peach down. Then they had a parade. Kids came rushing out of the crowd and asked James ''can we have some of your peach''?They said and of course James said ''sure have all you want''.

"James I see land," said ladybird.
"Quick get in, we're falling." 
Then suddenly "kersplat".  "Ow what was that!"  said  Earthworm.
"It is the land,lets go explore.
"WOW!" said the peopole of America. "Thats not a bomb it's a peach. Lets greet them".
"Hello hello hello" said the Americans.
"Look we're in America. Woop woop" said Centipede.
"But how to get down?"  said Grasshoper.
"I'm not very sure," said James.
"Look we're famuos," said Grasshoper.
"People are photographing us"  said James.
"We're in the news paper"  said Ladybird.
"Yay"  said Spider, "Here today was a giant peach travelling to America"  said the news paper reporter.
